Air Sourced Heat Pump.

A person today that I was talking to, that has had a new build home which was required by building regs. to have an air sourced heat pump for heating and hot water, complained that the system was slow to heat or cool as required. He said that he had to have underfloor heating installed. It was slow to warm the rooms on cold days. He recently had the system set to cool the rooms on the very hot recent days. But this morning was cooler and he required heating. Is this normal?

  • Some years ago I went to a full day seminar at the headquarters of Mitsubishi about their Ecodan air source heat pumps.

To cut a long story short, I was told they were only going to sell their heat pumps through approved installers who had to be Gas Safe registered installers.

Obviously you don’t need to be a gas installer to install air source heat pumps, you need an electrician and a heating engineer, but they were adamant that they were only interested in dealing with gas installers.

Less obvious is that only 1% of Gas Safe registered installers have actually been trained to design heating systems.

So Mitsubishi said they wanted Gas Safe registered installers who it turns out have not actually been trained to design heating systems to install their heat pumps and need to hire an electrician to install the electrical supply, rather than an electrician who intended to work with a skilled and qualified heating engineer.

Is it really surprising that there’s some very badly performing systems?
