M.I.C.C. in House. Why?

Today I came upon some orange served M.I.C.C. cable running from the loft in a bungalow to a single metalclad socket. It may have been an immersion heater supply, but the copper cylinder has been removed. It appears to be quite big, perhaps 4.0mm2 or 6.0mm2.

I wondered just why it was installed in a domestic bungalow.

Apprentice training by an electrician father perhaps. Used as it was available. But the extra work terminating it would not warrant using spare cable from your works would it?

Bemused of Norfolk.?

  • Probably what was to hand, or apprentice training/gaining practice.

MICC is sometimes an insurance requirement for thatched properties, was it ever thatched ?

MICC is often considered the safest system, perhaps someone was simply being cautious ?

No thatching there. The building is a P.V.C. cabled 1970s bungalow. The odd cable is the M.I.C.C. Very odd.

  • micc was a lot more common before SWA displaced it, for ourdoors and funny routing directions.

I have seen plenty in the past for cables that go outdoors to lights etc, maybe they were just used to using it. With the right tools it's not that hard/slow to fit.

  • The house I was in this afternoon has MICC which I assume supplies out buildings. At one time it was the cable of choice for running supplies to detached garages, greenhouses and the like.

I’m not sure when the switch to SWA was made, I’d guess 1980’s.

  • its also the only cable that looks tidy when exposed (if done properly)

But the snakey surface S.W.A. runs are becoming quite trendy now in some circles. They are considered artistic by some, especially by the new anti-rigid school.?

  • SWA is soooo last decade….

You should be running T&E in the cheapest shiny black flexible conduit you can find.  Have you learned nothing from YouTube?

  • you two are making me shake my head! It might even come loose

I have watched a few electricians on youtube, suckered in by the clickbait titles and the tubing is neater than SWA but even so, I wouldn't want either visible on my house

  • Simply copying French practice.

  • When I was 16 I ran, haha, an MICC cable in my mums kitchen! The way the young lad did the terms was spot on! I MUST admit I was looking for a mistake BUT, well done to him!

As far as ‘shiny black conduit’ goes I'd rather see MICC all day long!
