LED Driver compatability

Hi guys.   I hope this isn't too stupid a question.   I have a customer who has supplied some under kitchen LED cupboard lights and a driver that comes with a socket to plug in a few individual lights.  The problem is the little plugs on the lights don't fit in the sockets so presumably somebody has sent or ordered the wrong driver or lights.  The Driver is rated at 15W.  Is there likely to be a problem if i just cut off the plugs and socket and hard wire them or is there likely to be a compatibility problem.  So i guess my question is are the drivers standard and any LED fitting will work so long as the wattage isn't exceeded.

Cheers.

Gary

  • It depends.

If the lights are 12 volts DC and the substitute is also 12 volts DC and of sufficient capacity, then it should be fine.

If however the lights or the driver are of some odd and non standard voltage than it wont work and may let out the smoke.

  • Thank you

  • If you connect up this incompatible arrangement and in the future it all goes dramatically wrong, will you be held responsible. I'd ask them to send the stuff back and get compatible equipment.

  • I disagree, my view is that 12 volt DC LED power supplies are generic items like halogen lighting transformers, fluorescent lamp ballasts, and contactors.

Did everyone replace halogen lamp transformers with the same brand ?

  • I am with Zoom. It's a new install with customer supplied equipment that is incompatible. If something goes wrong it is going to be your fault. Tell them to send it back or make very clear that if you try to make it work it is not your problem if it doesn't. While you can put an alternative driver in do you know if the LEDs need constant current or constant voltage and are they dimmable?

Changing a halogen driver is child's play by comparison.

Perhaps not the same brand but of a similar or greater current rating. The demand on the transformer depended on the number of lamps connected. Two transformers may both provide 12 Volts D.C., but are they both rated at the same current output? Some lighting arrangements had more than one lamp per transformer. So a lower output transformer may struggle or get very hot.

  • I did state that I would interchange LED drivers only if both the original and the replacement were both 12 volts DC  and if the replacement was of sufficient capacity.

I was referring to this comment.

  • Cheers guys.   I didn't even suggest it in the end.  I came to the conclusion that if there was a problem then any warrantee would be voided so told her to get some more.
