Schndr Light Switches.

I am going to recommend  a certain make of light switches to all D.I.Yers. The make starts with an “S”.

They are just great for causing confusion, especially the two way type as the terminals are not traditionally positioned with the common at the point of a triangle and the L1 and L2 together opposite. Also the loop terminal confuses 'em luvverly. I got a load of work today when the householder had wired up some “S” light switches wrongly. GGGGGGGGGGGGrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat as that tiger used to say in the breakfast cereal commercial.

  • Back in 1983 I took on the carpentry contract for an new housing estate of seventy detached and semi-detached houses, the semis were really old fashioned and originally were not going to have central heating installed, but several of the local valuers down valued the houses for mortgage applications stating the reason for doing so was that they were so dated.

I was sat eating lunch with a plumber and electrician who were both older than me and had started work in the 1950's and they were comparing the houses to those when they started work, I remember the electrician saying the only real visible difference was that the accessories were white and the fuse board was cream rather than being brown.

I expect we will soon be back to round and brown accessories.

We are already there. Daughter has what I call “breadboards”. They are small boards, which have been CNC routed to accommodate the nastiest BS 1363 innards imaginable. It is her idea of retro, presumably emulating the little boards upon which the round bakelite switches used to sit. Her light switches had to have toggles rather than rockers. He who pays the piper calls the tune! ??
