Do you think steel banding like this is adequate as a fire clip? Screwed and plugged to masonry or screwed to timber.

What became of the old style T-shaped cable buckles. Far easier to set up a tight and straight cable run using them than with modern cable clips. Are they now prohibited?
Not prohibited as such, and still (occasionally) available. I think they're usually made from aluminium rather than steel though, so will likely have a significantly lower melting point and so might not be suitable for avoiding premature collapse in the case of fire…
