Power cable for motors

I understand pump motors tend to be wired in delta fashion, not needing a neutral connection. I have seen cases where a 4 core SWA cable has been used to power the motor, the fourth core being used as the earth connection. Is it possible to get 4 core SWA cable with brown, black and grey colours for the phases and green/yellow for the earth or is it common practise to use the blue core as the earth ?

  • Regular impact of an S.W.A. gland or continual vibration may loosen an S.W.A. gland, but it is perfectly acceptable to use the armour as the C.P.C. I prefer to use the CW “outdoor” type S.W.A. glands, where the compressed rubber gland holds the cable securely and offers strain relief to the armoured cable. If the S.W.A. cable is correctly terminated in a brass gland it should provide reliable earthing, after all that is what the gland makers designed the gland for.
