Underground Cable Tracing.

An P.V.C./P.V.C.  cable is run in steel conduit underground from a farm barn to another location. It may run underground to some nearby concrete slabs previously used as a base for wooden sheds, or it may run for about 80 metres to some distant  derelict outbuildings.

I am not too familiar with all of the types of underground cable tracers available.

Which would be the best type of cable tracer to use to determine its run? There may be other buried metal to confuse some tracers. Will a signal injected into the cable be able to be detected by a cable tracer as the cable in inside steel conduit?

The cable is currently dead.

Thanks,

Z.

Can't be - there must be at least one other person to operate the video camera. Likewise we have no idea what's lurking just out of sight - just because it's not in shot, doesn't mean it can't exist.

It looks like some sort of park to me. There are what may be goal posts and at least a couple of walkers. Judging by the road, there is plenty of green space behind the camera.

So why the hard hat (with ear muffs), hi-viz clothing, and gloves? It's because it's a H&S video!

That said, the gloves did come off at one point and those bare arms lack protection.

  • Going back to the original post, if @zoomup gets someone to stand and tap the end of the conduit repetitively with a hammer he could lie on the ground and listen for the noise.

That is basically as technical as some location techniques get, even such as the Megger Thump testers that are used to find underground cable faults.

Yeh but the guy in the video is on his own in the middle of a deserted field.

So what's the camera person going to do, throw the camera at the guy's head?

  • Maybe but if I was doing that and expected the camera man to injure me, I'd be looking for another camera man, not a hard hat.

It is a prop, like a white coat and clipboard.

And the shades are to make a cool cat?

Barry knows how to trace plastic water pipes, just like those old water board inspectors.

I love it! I have a plastic water pipe I need to track down. People will think I've really lost the plot when I'm lying on the ground with a stethoscope and having someone rattle the pipes.

  • For water pipes you do not crawl on the ground - you bring the sound up to you

  • If Voodoo works use that too, no shame in using what works, even to a small degree
