5.2.8.5 Toilet facilities and changing rooms

For such a small paragraph in BS5266, I fend many questions with respect to when you must provide emergency lighting and when it should be supported with emergency lighting calculations.

I assume I am not alone in this, so I thought I would share my interpretation of the requirements. I could not find any information on when you would consider a multi-closet facility to have borrowed light, the assumption at the end is unfounded and my interpretation only. Comments appreciated.

[post comment] The original intend of this post was to find if this table helped simplify the process of determining the requirements for emergency lighting in bathrooms etc. The intent was not to discuss the design process, nor the question of what borrowed light is, or any other standard.

Unfortunately, I am unable to delete the topic or close it.

Note: closet, wall and doors must allow borrowed light. Using standard partition sizes and typical minimum ceiling height this would include 300mm above, and 100mm below. Where closet cannot be provided with borrowed light then emergency lighting per closet should be provided.
  • It can work the other way too. A good few years back I noticed that a couple of wholesalers, when supplying pull switches for lighting. I bought them by the box for best prices. I usually stocked 2 way pulls because they could also be used for one way. Not much price difference so not worth the bother. Anyway, I did notcice if I actually asked for one way I ended up with 2 way at the one way price. So I ordered boxes of 1 way, small saving, always received two way. Over the years I saved quite a bit. Always save a shilling if you can, that`s me.

PS I did notice some years back that if you ordered an immersion heater from an Electrical Wholesaler you got an immersion heater with stat already fitted. If you ordered from a Plumbing Wholesaler the stat was not included. Same price though!. If you ordered from a Electrical Wholesaler who had obtained them from a Plumbing Wholesaler then they would give you the stat separately free of charge.

Why would anyone want a heater but not a stat? not unheard of but quite rare?

  • Why would anyone want a heater but not a stat?

I suppose if you're replacing an existing one, you could pinch the 'stat from the old one (likewise the flex). I suspect there are more replacements than new installs these days.

That could be done, but I never do, and I change many immersion heaters every year. It is not worth the trouble if the customer says that the new immersion heater is faulty because the stat fails in some way or another.

  • I think I deserve a badge for trying to stay on something like the subject.
