Cable terminations to lighting control gear

I have come across a lot of flexible cable terminations to lighting control gear where the sheath of the cable is removed before entering the control gear and the cores of the cable are clamped rather than the sheath. The control gear is supplied by the manufacturer complete with flex and a plug for attachment to a modular wiring system.  The manufacturer says it complies with the product standard BS EN 60598.

  • Well, it does not say that wires should be sheathed, and when clamped the wires cannot move and abrade, so clearly it complies with that rule as written.

    Quite often there is a failure for product standards and wiring regs to join up.

    there is a similar apparent failure with non- earthed metal bodied lamp fittings, where the cable and its supports provide a functional equivalent to double insulation, with what looks like unsheathed (single insulated wire), but tested to a higher voltage. In fact that is not much of a test, as even telephone wire pair will hold off a kV if the ends are kept apart.
