Cable terminations to lighting control gear

I have come across a lot of flexible cable terminations to lighting control gear where the sheath of the cable is removed before entering the control gear and the cores of the cable are clamped rather than the sheath. The control gear is supplied by the manufacturer complete with flex and a plug for attachment to a modular wiring system.  The manufacturer says it complies with the product standard BS EN 60598.

  • The picture seems to show a braided sleeve. It reminds me a bit of the old school method of connecting hot fittings where the core insulation was oversleeved or replaced by heat-resistant (usually glass fibre based) sleeving. I wonder if they're trying something similar with the sheath - so it's not so much missing the sheath at the point of entry, but has been provided with a alternative sheath (possibly one more suitable for the conditions at that point). Just a thought.
