Supply type?

Hi people,

I need to know the supply type, see picture.

Its thrown me as there  are 2 cables but not of same size so I assume not a looped service. Not the best picture but the cable on the left appears to be your average TNCS type cable but the cable on the right is about half the diameter, would this be a seperate earth cable?

  • could be looped, the outbound one is often thinner than incomer.

Any writing on the cable ?

Equally end of line property on a run of PME is supposed to have an electrode if the run is longer than a certain length.

How does Ze and ZLN (230/[pssc) compare ?- if practically identical probably PME.

Failing any clarity, call the DNO.. They ought to know or come out to check,

    Mike.

  • Thanks Mike,

The looped supplies I've come acsross in the past have been the same cable in and out.

Haven't taken any readings as yet, will contact DNO on Monday ?

The DNO seem to have provided an Earth terminal - so provided that's working, it's TN. Just about every UK DNO says to treat their earth terminals as PME unless there's some explicit agreement that it isn't (which is unlikely unless this is a caravan site or marina) - as if it's not PME now it's likely to be in the future. They don't even have to change anything at the head to make it PME - just re-do some joints under the road or on poles.

Really we could do with a box on the forms that says ‘Appears to be TN-S but treat as PME' (which means we'd have to take all the PME precautions but still keep and eye on Ze which could be a bit higher like TN-S).

Random thought - could the 2nd cable be a loop to something like a street light? (I'm thinking of olde worlde places that sometimes still have street lights on brackets on the outside of buildings.)
