Consumer unit tails hidden in void under stairs

Hi

I did a consumer unit change in Friday including upgrading the tails from 16mm to 25mm.

The tails ran from an outside meter box, through the wall and then for about 70cm through a void formed by lower third of under stairs space being boxed in by brick walls, then going in to the back of the consumer unit.

The tails were clipped around the edge inside the meter box and held in a clamp inside the consumer unit; therefore well supported at both ends. But I have reused the concealed run and they are unsupported inside the void.

The only other options I could see would have been run them as armoured cable inside the void or in the outside of the house. For both options I would have created significant disruption and significant work.

Just wondering what others would have done in this situation.

Thanks

Alan

  • Thanks for the feedback, it's good to have some feedback that I was thinking along the right lines. My main concern was that the boxed in area would be classed as fabric of the building and the cable would require more protection. Having read 522.6.202 my interpretation is that the boxed in section would not be classed as fabric of the building because it's not a wall or partition; this based on your comments leaves me comfortable with my installation.
