There are several points here about diesels. If you want a Euro6 generator they are much more expensive. As they also use AdBlue they are a pain in the neck because you can add a big diesel tank for continuous running but the blue tank is small. For home use a Perkins one will be fine, you should get 20,000 hours between major overhauls (2 years continuous running) but obviously, the normal maintenance is required for filters, oil, etc. It should be run regularly for an hour if you want reliability when the mains fails, but that may well become often if Boris gets his way. Other major engine makes are also good, but my experience with Kubota is not great. I like some alternators better than others, Stamford being very good on both regulation and life, particularly damp resistance.
