Cheap S.P.D.

Don't buy an expensive S.P.D. when you can buy a "Cheapo S.P.D." As recently demonstrated inside a cheap  Chinese made 13 Amp double switched socket. The autopsy revealed a black mess by a double pole switch and arcing to the earth bar above that tripped off the house R.C.D. Therefore the Cheapo socket has integral surge protection. It is suspected that the arcing was caused by a thunder storm and lighting strike nearby. (Nearby sub-station) The close positioning of the double pole switch mechanism parts allowed arcing internally which eventually travelled as plasma to the earth bar. Very novel. So for two quid you get inbuilt high Voltage suppression. The device is not auto resetting though.

  • I've seem a similar effect ... only the initial cause that time was some, ahem, 'semiconducting organic fluid' (provided by the owner's tomcat) Frowning2
