Since switching to three phase my consumption has rocketed to 25,000KWH per annum, despite no significant additional load.

We moved to three phase 3.5 years ago an anticipation of electric cars (which we don't have). 

Since then We have been consuming around 25,000KWH pa according to the meter. 

I've had a second meter fitted and it's validated these numbers. 

When I switch all the RCDs off it stops, so clearly it's my side of the RCDs. 

The house is around 10 years old with gas heating and gas cooking. We have low energy light bulbs. 

The overnight consumption seems to show we're using 4+KWH per hour when we're asleep. 

Load balancing was mentioned and I vaguely remember it from my degree but I don't believe that's it.

    To state the obvious,  it hasn't been changed to three phase,  it's two phase supplied through a three phase meter, so there's no balance across the phases at all.

  • Why do you feel this makes any difference? 

    The meter doesn't care whether the phases are balanced or not... it simply measures & accumulates the total energy passing through. It will do this correctly whether the load is balanced, unbalanced, single phase, two phase or three phase.

  • well yes, as he calls it a 3 phase installation, but one phase is reserved for an electric car he does not yet have. so it is a 2/3 phase installation. Now it may not be the best use of the capabilities of a 3 phase supply to not load one at all, but the metering will still record the sum of all loads correctly. As far as I know no-one charges extra for phase imbalance on direct metered 3 phase supplies as small as this, and even if they did the units used in kWh would still be correct.

    This is a surprisingly slow moving thread, I must say were it my money leaking away at that rate, I'd be considerably more pro-active about turning absolutely everything off and seeing what stopped working.

  • agree, hopeless, the  idea that 'newest' and 'oldest' sorting options might actually be supposed to sort posts in time order, and nothing else, not who it was written by, by who it was a reply to, or from or someone's idea of favourite , seems to be utterly lost on the programmers. There was talk of changing the meaning of the reply buttons to make it clearer that there were multiple flavours, but that has not happened yet  either.

  • The forum has changed, you just have not noticed, the reply button to this comment now says “Reply to Sparkingchip” rather than just “”Reply” to differentiate it from the Reply button at the top of the page that adds onto to end of the whole thread.

    I don't quite see the difference between using two phases at a 3-phase service head on the one hand, and bringing in two single-phase supplies from the street. It might even be cheaper.

    (My late mother had a 3-phase supply, but with only one connected. I assume that it was because she lived in the last house in the street and it had been easiest to bring in the end of the street main.)
