Drive by EICR inspections

I'm hearing there have been loads of issues with unsatisfactory reports and drive by inspections. One electrician who has done hundreds of EICR inspection and testing approved by the NIC had seen “a number of dubious reports and poor practice including guys sitting in cafés filling in page after page from a pad containing report sheets and certificates”.

Is the voluntary competent electrician scheme strong enough?
I'd be really grateful if anyone wanted to chat, either on or off the record.

  • Part of the problem is housing associations and councils accepting that contractors will often be carrying out 10 -12 EICRs per electrician per day. These are offered out to subbies at £25-35 each on the basis that you can 'earn' 250+ a day. Raw data is sent into the office, admin staff type out the certs and then a QS runs his eye over them for any obvious errors and then countersigns for issuing.

Its normal for all circuits to have >500megs for insulation and every R1&R2 box to have been filled in.

That's in the supposedly regulated environment, in the wild of private landlords/rental agency prices are higher but quite often the end resulting certificate is of the same dubious value.
