6mm flat twin NO earth?

So I came across an old cooker circuit fed from what I thought was 6mm T&E however it has no earth.  I didn't think it was a thing but it appears it is!

So how would the cooker have beed earthed?

Whilst on the subject of old cables, what were the sizes of eg 2.5mm twin and earth? it has the stranded conductors, is it still 2.5mm with 1.5mm CPC?

  • I was in a wholesalers a few years back and a fellow was reordering about 12m 1.0 T & E as a replacement he wanted for the exact same piece he`d bought a week previously. His electrician sent him back because he`d pulled the earthwire right out because the original wiring for his wall lights (from many years ago) had no cpc. Just some twin without earth PVC cable and wooden wall lights originally (not sure what lampholders were though). He did say he`d had a hellavah job removing that earthwire and his electrician was not pleased because the cable was damaged.

Mind you, I heard a few times about folk extending ring final with bellwire and .... believe it or not (once only) Coax!

  • When I was a naive youth with no money, I installed some new sockets in my bedroom from a power circuit for small appliances like lights, a radio and an audio system. I used 5 Amp flex and fused it down with 5 Amp fuse wire in a circular junction box. It served its purpose well. A qualified sparks that came to mend the cooker that I had damaged took one look at it and said that it would be just as cheap to do the job properly. I removed the installation before we left the flat for ever. I had left a very bright fluorescent sticker under the carpet to warn of cables under the floor boards. The landlady found this and was very concerned.
