Roll up! Roll up!

So they are all at it, NICEIC, IET, even the training organisation I tutor for! Only £199 plus vat will bring you up to speed with the “major”developments about to be rolled out in Amendment two. Emails shot out to prospective clients in the electrical industry who have been persuaded, nay, brainwashed, into thinking that they can’t be without the critical information contained in every cough and splutter of a change to BS7671. For certain we have to keep on our toes about technical issues but the oligarchs don’t need to ram their hands into our pockets at every opportunity.
No one needs a dedicated course for the changes. There will be plenty of free information in technical magazines and places like YouTube. Keep your money, the way things are going, you’ll need £199 to fill the van with diesel!

  • Sometime ago my phone rang and I answered it to speak to a forum member, who enquired if I was in a cave because there was an echo.

I said I was in the toilets in Asda at High Wycombe having stopped for diesel and I was on my way to Hemel Hempstead.

And I am said the forum member, that's on his way to Hemel Hempstead not in the toilets at Asda, we aren't into socialising in supermarket toilets.

He enquired why I was going to Hemel Hempstead, I said to drill six holes in a ceiling then reconnect six down lights, refit the kitchen cupboard pelmets and window blind,  having been down on the Tuesday to first fix the lights and get the job ready for the plasterers. He said he was on his way to the BSI, which was far more impressive.

Anyway, a hour or so later I realised I was actually sat outside the BSI stuck in traffic and this forum member would be there within five minutes as the forum member was coming from the other direction and traffic was flowing freely from his end of the road.

Unfortunately I had already arranged to go to another job on the way back or else I could have sat on the car park to speak to the forum member face to face and maybe offer go call back after I had done the job to provide my services as a consultant in return for a pre-release copy of the new regs.

However unfortunately my diary was full, so they missed what might have been.

  • On the 8th January 2015 a forum member said”

“The next edition will be the 18th Edition in about 3 years time by which time I would have won the Premium Bonds and will be living on a Caribbean island with a 25 year old dizzy blond and won't need a copy. Note to self best put an order in now for the 18th Edition.”

It seems he will still working hard when the 18th Edition Amendment 2 is published and the retirement plan did not go as planned.

  • Well it is about organisations making more and more money. Does it enhance safety? not much I think. Still the mind set is to do something to make things better. Does it? not much if at all.

Take a look at Part P, our politicians were told that it should cost each electrical entity about £500 over 5 years and enhance safety to a large degree.

Did it do either of these things? Answers on a postcard.

(Actually I do think it got more electricians to have some better test gear  rather than just a simple DIY multimeter and a piece of bellwire)

  • I would like to see clear data showing the age profile of the electrical industry as a whole, then a breakdown of the age profile of each section of the industry.

I suspect that generally the age profile of self employed and small business owners who are registered with the competence schemes is now generally fifties and sixties with the younger guys who should be coming through and joining up as these older guys retire preferring to sub-contract and fly under the radar.

  • Morning All

No need to splash the cash unless you want to. The IET are doing free webinars to be found here. https://electrical.theiet.org/courses-resources-career/technical-webinars/.

Not listed on this link yet will be on then 6th April on Initial Verification which will cover the changes to inspection and testing.

Also come to the Elex shows all around the country where the IET will be prsenting on the AMD 2 changes. You can also talk to the IET team on the stand who will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

  • I would like to go to Elex Harrogate again, not been for a few years due to illness then pandemic. I like the shows and particularly the seminars and off course our hero JP has been known to star on the panel. Not sure when the Harrogate one is yet, they  used to be in early March just in time to see the lovely Crocus bloom by the roadside and we have been known to follow it with a trip to Scarborough and overnight stay. nice roun out Scarborogh, Bridlington, Flamborough, Whitby, Goathland , Sutton bank. Good country Yorkshire/Lancashire. So when is Elex Harrogate penciled in for?

  • Morning Ebee

The Harrogate Elex show is on the 27th and 28th April.
