CONSIDERING IET MEMBERSHIP OR YOU ARE ALREADY A MEMBER

Once again I need you help please?

If you have not thought about being a member, or you are thing about being a member of the IET or you are an existing member of the IET what benefits would you want from the IET? Is what is on offer at the moment meeting your needs or not attractive to you.

I wear a number of IET hats and in one role I am looking at improving membership from the installation industry which is not that good in comparison to the size of the industry.

The IET do a lot of good stuff but I am convinced that it is not widely known about. For example this forum is funded and supported as part of the IETs charitable commitment. Also the free webinars we have been doing (Next one on the 5th April).

So rather than me saying I know "whats good for you" I want to hear your views?

Thanks

JP

  • I'd join and happily pay the fee just for the return of the old forum or at least something that works the same.

This forum is such a mess.

  • Bring back the Society of Telegraph Engineers!!

  • Agreed.

  • If you are a regular purchaser of IET publications then you are already paying for it.

  • I am more interested in the hierarchical structure and the revenue flows.

Who creates new regulations and upon what basis?

Today, I ran into two former colleagues who worked at the same place where I used to work, like myself, both turned to self employment and both became Approved Contractors. Both told me today that they had told their Approved Scheme Inspectors that they were refusing to fit AFDDs because of the high price. Both of their inspectors told them that they HAD TO begin fitting them, to which both contractors replied that if this was the case, then they would cancel their scheme memberships. The major fear being the expense and total lack of confidence in these devices coupled with the present worsening cost of living crisis and subsequent loss of business due to over-expensive quotes for the mandatory fitting of unproven technology.

This is one of the reasons why I am most interested as to who drives the changes and what the real, as opposed to the spurious 'enhanced safety' reason is behind it, and who is really benefiting form the changes. If increased recruitment is what the IET is after, then perhaps they might wish to transparently explain their role in drafting the changes to the wiring regulations.

So how do these 'committees' integrate? CENLEC, BEAMA, IEC, JPLE64, IET, BSI et al? Who is at the top and who is at the bottom of the food chain?

  • This is a totally unacceptable situation. The I.E.T. staff are slow, uncaring, inefficient and useless. The I.E.T. staff should be ashamed. This is one reason not to become an I.E.T.member. We are treated like mushrooms....kept in the dark. Forum moderators are quick enough to remove my posts, but take weeks to actions a simple request. Take note. The world is watching. All I want is a single A4 sheet of paper proving my membership position after the I.E.T. has taken my money. Is that too much to ask?
