3 phase domestic

Hi all. I am a domestic electrician and I only work on houses. We do a lot of standard new builds.

Some of the new upcoming houses are said to have a 3 phase supply, I'm not entirely sure how this affects me, what do I need to do different, what fuseboard etc etc

Really appreciate any advice

Thank you

  • 400V Jaymack!

  • Manufacturers are going to have to play catch up, not all RCBOs and AFDDs that fit in domestic single phase consumer units will fit in their current offering of commercial three phase distribution boards.

  • It may be a nominal 400 V David, but around here it is always 440V(or occasionally a bit more).

  • Genuine photo from where I was working today, taken whilst looking at this forum whilst eating my cheese and pickle sandwiches, as you do.

Definitely closer to 415 than 400.

  • Traditionally houses with three phase supplies were big, but rarely had three phase loads, so the three single phase fuse board approach was common, often one on each floor or a couple in the house and one in the outbuildings. It worked, but generally did not balance the load.

Now we will have small houses with three phase loads and that outdated approach isn’t suitable.

Houses are going to have to have three phase consumer units and electricians are going to have to get up to speed.
