  • Sounds rather unlikely to me.

The refrigerants used in modern air conditioning have very low toxicity, and very seldom kill, except by suffocation which needs a substantial concentration of the gas that is most unlikely to occur from a domestic sized unit.

The report also claims that several villas or apartments, presumably each with its own air conditioning system suffered the same problem. Even more unlikely.

More likely in my view is carbon monoxide from gas water heaters, or motor vehicles, or a charcoal barbecue. Or even something completely unrelated such as food poisoning or infectious illness.
