8 Pin Bulgin plugs and sockets.

I have been servicing some old N.J.D. 4 channel disco lighting controllers. They use a Bulgin 8 pin socket. The sockets have female contacts that have a slight sideways movement in their housing. I presume that this aids easy plug insertion and allows for slight manufacturing tolerances. The pins are rated at only 6 Amps. So pins 7 and 8 are joined together in the controller at the socket for the neutral. As the link is hard soldered with wire, the pins are then made immoveable and lack the slight sideways movement. I have not seen any damage or problems with this linking so far, but I imagine if all the socket contacts were to be made solid there might be.

  • Horrible things. Often misused with mains voltage on the pins. And even if wired correctly the mains voltage on the socket is only partly shrouded.

And no reliably applied convention as to which pin serves what purpose, so if "Dave's dodgy disco" equipment is interconnected with "Berts better disco" there is a significant risk of accident. Bit surprised that these were EVER allowed even under the somewhat relaxed standards of decades past.

  • Normally wired Earth to centre pin. Also, pin 1 to pin 1, pin 2 to pin 2, pin 3 to pin 3 etc. on a plug to plug lead. So they should be interchangeable from Dave's Dodgy Disco to Carl's Super Roadshow. They are not used much these with heavy hot light bulb illuminated disco screens............it's mainly L.E.D. stuff with a built in controller.
