Control Panel wiring and UKCA

Hi Guys

Looking to start manufacturing custom control enclosures for led lighting from what i understand these will need a UKCA mark to distribute into the uk.

All the components inside the enclosure are either CE or UKCA marked and its just assembling by fixing the components onto the panel and wiring to terminals for the customer to install on site.

i understand that we need to follow the low voltage directive for self certification on the enclosure but the standards are a little confusing on which one to follow.

its been suggested that we follow BS7671 for the wiring but we have also had BS61439 mentioned.

Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

  • BS 7671 does not apply to pre-manufactured assemblies. It cannot therefore be used.

BS EN IEC 61439 series is a possibility. But if you are using standards as a means of conformity, you need to refer to all standards that apply.

Will the control panel be part of Machinery (or its controls) as defined in the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations? If so, BS EN 60204-1, and potentially other Machinery Safety standards, is likely to apply, and the relevant legislation also listed on the DofC.

  • from what i understand these will need a UKCA mark to distribute into the uk.

It depends on which bit of the UK. I think you'll need an UKNI and/or(?) CE mark for Northern Ireland.

  • They are not pre manufactured. we receive everything in parts. The control panel with be its own entity mounted on a wall purely for control of lighting. The units that are going inside have no wiring they are all terminal connections that will need wiring to each other and then to a bank of terminals for customer connection hence the wonder on 7671

i've seen a few companies that sell the same thing using just 61439 and its sub components in their DofC

Just trying to make sure that colours and connections are by the book.

    Thanks

  • They are not pre manufactured.

Apologies. It doesn't make a difference really, Regulation 113.1 of BS 7671 now simply says:

The Regulations do not deal with requirements for the construction of assemblies of electrical equipment, which are required to comply with appropriate standards.

So, installation and connection of equipment BS 7671 applies (unless it's an exempt installation in the Scope), but if you build that into an assembly (even on-site), then BS 7671 can't be used for the assembly itself.

In some ways, it is up to the installer to determine the distinction between a piece of equipment or a set of terminals in a box, vs "construction of assemblies of electrical equipment", but in this case it's clear you are talking about the latter ... a collection of disparate, separately-certified, equipment, being assembled into a controlgear assembly of some form.

In this case, BS EN 61439 series of standards is likely to be the most appropriate I would have thought.

  • Thank you for your help and clarification.
