While I was er havin a pipe smoke by the old pottin shed I gotta thinkin. The wether as bin so dry of late that I recommend givin yer Terre Linea a good watterin. At least 2 gallons of good rain watter will do it much good. Otherwise yer may git a shock. It only goes down about 4 feet. It could be a sittin in jist dry sand. If the watterin can is leakin just give it a good piffin on. Just member to yurn orf the lecktricity first.

    A risk assessment may be advisable, particularly if the rod can be seen from next doors kitchen window. 

    Seriously, if the top of the rod is at ground level the first couple of feet isn’t really going to be much use due to freezing and drying, so your four foot rod is effectively only two foot long.

    I worked with an electrician who said he and his mate put an earth rod in for a small shed at the bottom end of Hartlebury Common by Stourport on Severn, the common is a sand heath and he said they went down around forty five feet before they got an acceptable test result, simply driving the rod in with a lump hammer. 

    I would not have thought a four foot rod is much use in your part of the country, I have installed twelve foot rods around where I live as we are on the second alluvial plain of the Severn Valley.
