EMC SOURCE

As some of you may know I am an amateur radio enthusiast (G8NUP).

I operate on HF and VHF. I had experienced a high level of noise on 14MHz up to S8 drowning out signals below that level. I set to a put in loads of measures involving a Balun, choke and lots of ferrite with a high level of success with the noise down to S3/4 happy days.

Yesterday I rigged up a hoist to lift a de-humidfier in to to my loft as the senior manager did not want it in the hall and instructed it should go to the dump. So out of site out of mind.

Last night I had a tune around 14MHz and had S7/S8 points of noise again. What could it be a neighbor with some new piece of electronics generating shed loads of noise?

This morning the noise had gone, strange.

The I remembered whilst up in the loft I had been using a portable LED flood light whilst re-insulating and boarding the loft. So I plugged it in and put in on charge. That was my source of EMC. Once charged the noise disappeared no doubt when the SMPS turned off.

Just thought you might want to know.

  • Occasionally, the LED G9 lamps in my kitchen lights cause interference with my DAB receiver. If I then touch the aerial, it tends to go away. These things may be sold here, but I doubt they are type tested in China, and I have even more doubt that the Importers check their credentials.
