Anode Tester Button.

Small domestic wall mounted unvented water heater. Electric element. Small moving coil indicator red or green sections, marked ANODE TEST.  Press button and white needle falls into red section. What exactly does this indicate? X years of life before the internals  rot away?

Thanks,

Z.

  • It is presumably measuring the DC (battery voltage) between the protective anode  and the rest of the metal case it is protecting, by briefly interrupting the connection. When there is no DC, the protective electrode has presumably been pretty much dissolved away and it is time to fit a new one.
