Short Estate Lamp Column.

Old 3 inch diameter vertical steel column. Top push on arm rusted on, all bolts rusted. Difficult to remove. One bolt of 4, head sheered off. Is it best to saw the top of the column off and fit a new arm or try to get a clamp on new head?

The image is a very rough approximation of the real thing. The real column is circular.

  • Around here the entire column gets replaced once they're at the end of their service life (which yours sounds to be).

I heard tell that one or two 'time expired' columns somewhere came down of their own accord and so many litigation adverse local authorities are now hastily replacing everything that's approaching its initial design life regardless of actual condition. Curiously some of the very old cast iron trolley poles serving as lampposts in these parts survived the elves' attention - simply because the old designs never specified an intended service life.

I always wondered why the replacement columns always seem to be a couple of metres taller than the originals even though there never seemed to be much consistency in the original heights.
