BS7671 Band 1 & 2 Circuits separation

Good afternoon

If anyone could help me with this.

I have in a hotel a basket with CAT6 cables and a basket with all the LV cables (small power & lighting).

These are Band 1 and Band 2 cables

Is there any table in BS7671 that tells me how far apart these two baskets should be?

I can only find Reg 528.1 that just tells me I cant have them in the same containment.

However cant find any advice about how much space I should have between band 1 and band 2 services when in different containments

Has anyone seen any table or something in BS7671 about this?

Cheers

  • In this case, the answer is in BS 6701 (as that standard covers telecomms cables like Cat6, and should be used in addition to BS 7671 as per Regulation 110.1.3).

For indoor cables, Clause 5.4.4.2 of BS 6701 requires a minimum separation of at least 50 mm between the telecommunication cables and power cables, even if in different containment. (The standard says that telecomms and power must be at least in different compartments of wiring systems, or in separate containment.)

In basket, however, things are more tricky. If the baskets are side-by-side (no solid metallic barrier) then potentially 150 mm minimum is required between cables (not necessarily containment).

If basket has a more solid 'lid', and baskets are "stacked", AND the basket and lids are properly earthed, then that changes things and the separation could be as little as 50 mm.
