Definition of 'defect' for comments on existing installation

When filling out electrical certificates, for the comments on existing installation section, this points to 644.1.2 which says that "The person responsible for the new work...will record...any defects found, so far is reasonably practicable, in the existing installation.".

What do we class as a defect? - anything that is not up to the latest BS7671? There is no definition in BS7671.

  • Yes. Any such defect will also be awarded a code. Code 1 or code 2 means as unsatisfactory. Code 3 means satisfactory because safety is still maintained, however it might not be to the latest standard but the inspector has determined it is still pretty safe. FI (further investigation required) really means unsatisfactory because further investigation may in fact reveal a code 1 or code 2 once a determination is made.
