Definition of 'defect' for comments on existing installation

When filling out electrical certificates, for the comments on existing installation section, this points to 644.1.2 which says that "The person responsible for the new work...will record...any defects found, so far is reasonably practicable, in the existing installation.".

What do we class as a defect? - anything that is not up to the latest BS7671? There is no definition in BS7671.

  • I think you are referring to the "comments on existing installation" boxes on EICs and MWEICs, and not an EICR. So no codes are attributed to the defects in these 2 forms. After all, an EICR is a comment on an existing installation in its entirety.

The defects recorded do not affect the safety of your new work, else they would have needed to be fixed (eg no main bonding where required). so are things like no RCD protection to socket circuits, when you worked on the lights.

  • I stand corrected, codes would not be awarded if it is not an EICR/PIR
