Definition of 'defect' for comments on existing installation

When filling out electrical certificates, for the comments on existing installation section, this points to 644.1.2 which says that "The person responsible for the new work...will record...any defects found, so far is reasonably practicable, in the existing installation.".

What do we class as a defect? - anything that is not up to the latest BS7671? There is no definition in BS7671.

  • Probably easiest just to sum it up as anything that is not as it should be to current standards.

I'd maybe want to exclude minor deviations from current BS 7671 though - e,g. red/black colour coding on cables, or equipment not complying with the current product standards (e.g. BS 5486 CUs or BS 3871 MCBs).
