What is a decent manufacturer for domestic power and light cables?

I am specifying cables for a domestic house construction. Do members have any advice about manufacturers? For example, I understand certain Chinese manufacturers produce very cheap cable, but the quality is terrible.  Which manufacturer produces good quality cable for a reasonable price?

  • Prysmian or cleveland cables come To mind, dont  think I have come across Chinese cable, plenty of dodgy Turkish cable about in the past though.

  • Just make sure that it is BASEC approved with BASEC embossed in the sheath.

  • Agree that it should be BASEC approved and with BASEC embossed on the sheath, but that alone is not enough, Chinese imports may well carry fake BASEC marking.

Examine cable with a critical eye, does the copper core and the plastic insulation feel "right" what is the weight of a full roll and how does this compare with known good cable, a lighter than expected weight suggests that the copper cores are in chinese mm, lighter than expected weight may also indicate that it contains 100 chinese meters, or about 91 actual meters. Examine the cut end with a magnifying glass to ensure that they are solid copper and not copper clad aluminium. Measure the end to end resistance of a full roll and compare with published figures or with a known good roll, this will reveal undersized conductors, or copper clad aluminium, or low grade recycled copper.

  • Agree that it should be BASEC approved and with BASEC embossed on the sheath, but that alone is not enough, Chinese imports may well carry fake BASEC marking.

The other thing of course is to use a reputable supplier and not just any old Tom, Dick or Harry on eBay. After all, if you are going to fake BASEC, you may as well add Prysmian, etc.

Back to the OP, if you are just specifying the contract as opposed to supplying and fitting, BASEC should be enough.

  • My go-to is Eland Cables Global Cables and Cable Accessories Supplier | Eland Cables

  • A couple of days ago I went into my local electrical wholesaler at five to five and asked for a fifty metre roll of 6.0 mm twin and earth, the guy on the counter came back with a hundred metre roll, as they were pulling the shutter down and locking up I said don’t bother changing it I’ll have the hundred metres.

The guy on the counter passed comment that he had just successfully up sold, he certainly had the roll of cable was £204.00.

  • I have not bought a hundred metre roll of 10.0 mm twin and earth for a couple of months, I guess they are currently around £340.00.

There is no such thing as cheap cable is there?

  • It's the same the whole world over,
It's the poor what gets the blame,
It's the rich what gets the pleasure,
Ain't it all a blooming shame?

  • 330 inc vat at TLC ;-) who are my 'go-to' .  No connection except as a smiling customer, well until I get the bill.

    M,

  • 10.0 mm has to be a fiver for a cut length.
