Paid not to consume electricity...

Looks like the scheme is going forward

Has anyone heard yet the details of how it will work? ... as (even with a smart meter) they can't measure what you don't use so presumably will try to compare with some kind of "normal" - any idea what that "normal" is likely to be? An average across all customers - or what you actually used the same day the previous week or something like?  I'm just wondering if it might allow the unscrupulous to inflate their usage at certain times to claim the extra money at others...

  • I wonder how many people realise the ridiculous situation we are now saddled with? Our system has worked beautifully for 100 years and then a pile of deluded idiots come along and break it completely. This is only just the start, it can only get worse and the UK is then effectively a Third World country. I read somewhere that the Boris plan for 8 more nuclear plants has been quietly dropped, so the end of Britain is well in the sights. All this IS part of a plan, but not the one we actually voted for!

  • Not just deluded idiots they are criminals.

I voted Boris to get out of the European clutches not for this Green agenda.

I too fear the end of Britain and western societies is the goal of the climate zealots.

Yes, but we don't have control over Putin and his cronies - the current crisis being primarily driven by the world market price of fossil fuels - the immediate problem isn't lack of generating capacity but lack of affordable fuel. Surely far better to move to a system as far as reasonably practical that doesn't need fuel at all but can be supplied by our own natural and replaceable resources?

        - Andy.

  • This is correct.

We have no control over Putin  And we need affordable fuel urgently. Unfortunately our ability to be self sufficient has be taken away. We have generations worth of fossil fuels under our feet.

Also, unfortunately our gutless snowflake leaders are powerless to use our abundant energy sources, them having all been taken over by environmental lunatics who's ambitions are to destroy our society.

  •  "environmental lunatics who's ambitions are to destroy our society."

without the greens we might destroy our society and our planet a little slower.

With what is happening in the world today then it might well be pretty fast,

Most of those environmentalists probably do not actually want to destroy anything but don`t mind hurting a little if it saves the environment

  • It's got nothing to do with any "Green agenda" and everything to do with a total lack of planning by successive governments.  Leave it to the markets and everything will be wonderful.

So nuclear power stations are shutting down faster than we're building them.  We are becoming ever more reliant on imported gas, but have almost no gas storage in this country.

There's no profit in having power stations that aren't being used, and if you're a power generator, it isn't your problem if there's insufficient supply.

  • You are right but wrong at the same time.

The green agenda has brought us to the up and coming blackouts. Following succesive governments complete disregard to the energy requirements of the population. For some bizarre reason fossil fuels and the best option of nuclear are stopped instantly. This is the green agenda at full throttle.

Just look at China increasing coal fired and nuclear power station  increasing so they can manufacture weson society's solar panels and wind turbines. Absolute green madness.

  • This is just re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic, with someone making a killing off the back of the exercise.

The country is being run by deluded idiots! You need a Smart meter and a signed up supplier to take advantage of this lunacy. They reckon at best in the worst case scenario you might save £100 by avoiding using your lecky between 4-9 pm. Is it worth the family arguments and bad moods due to hunger pangs? I think not. People will soon lose interest except of course, for the green zealots.

As usual, a few well meaning environmentalists have become Useful Idiots after having been hijacked by left wing extremists who wish to reorder society to their own liking.

Time to break out the candles and return to the stone age.Oh, and don't forget the pitchforks either.

I wonder how commerce is going to handle this? Cashless society and no card machines working for hours on end.

"Sorry Prime Minister, I can't pay my tax bill online coz there's no power.".

  • The present high price of natural gas is due largely to putins war.  It therefore seems prudent to increase use of renewable electricity sources, so far as weather conditions permit. We will still need natural gas for when wind and solar are lacking.

But to be burning expensive imported gas during windy or bright conditions  is unwise. Wind power recently reached a new record, BUT we were still burning gas even when wind was plentiful. Energy security will be improved by generating more of our electricity from renewables within our own territory.

Better to be reliant on expensive gas for 25% of our needs rather than for 50%

  • More wind and solar equals more uncertainty with our energy stability. What we need is a slow transition and investment in that. Maybe it'll take 100 years. In the meantime we must use our own source of fossil fuels. These fuels got us to where we are today and will guide us to the future in a stable transition.
