Requirement of gaskets for BESA or universal box.

Please help me to get clarification on the below statement. Is it a requirement according to the BS7671 and Buiding Regs?

"Where conduits pass through fire-rated ceilings and walls, it is a requirement to terminate each side with a BESA or universal box fitted with intumescent gaskets to stop fire penetrating. It is also a requirement to fit intumescent gaskets in the back of metal switch/socket boxes where they are back-to-back and cables pass through the wall."

  • It can also depend on the size off the conduit - BS 7671 says that conduit/trunking with an internal cross-section up to 710mm² (with a few other conditions) need not be sealed internally - see 527.2.3.

If you did have to seal then a round box seems like a sensible way of achieving that, while maintaining accessibility for future maintenance.

More draconian demands can of course be introduced as customer requirements - wiring & building regs are normally regarded as minimums rather a mandatory  uniform solution. The customer can always get "better" if they pay for it.

  • So about 30mm diameter?
