E-bikes and EV regs in BS7671

Hello I have a query - does same rules apply regarding earthing arrangement for E-bike charging stations as for EV charging stations? I have a project where I need to install a e-bike charging station and usually those consist of couple of British sockets + two outlets for ELV chargers leads. Whole station takes up to 16 Amp SPN. Now usually for a socket it would be an RCBO from local DB/Feeder pillar to it, however as this would classify as EV Charging Station I believe I would have to stake it if TN-C-S supply is in place in order to avoid floating netural issue? Alternatively O-PEN device which I am sure will be missing from the charger itself.

Any advice would be appreciated as whole EV/E-bike sector is really unchartered waters territory for me!

  • I've not had any direct experience of e-bike chargers, but would guess they're SELV (or product standard equivalent) from a separate charger (like a laptop PSU) - so the bike itself doesn't have a mains connection and the frame isn't connected to the LV PE conductors. If that's the case then none of the usual problems with EVs (having to connect the car chassis to PE for ADS outdoors, and associated broken PEN issues) would occur. So rather like mobility scooters, e-bikes would be out of scope of section 722.

  • smaller switch mode power supplies are generally class 2 and there would be no connection to earth from the bike frame.

    Cars are a special case, where there is a lot of power and essentially a class 1 ADS. Also the connectors are specific to allow the car and charger to negotiate the power limits.

    As per the reply above, none of this applies to a bike - the power is lower.

    Unless the type of bike and charger is known, you will have to assume that a normal socket is adequate - However if folk are going to rock up with random bikes and chargers you cannot be too sure what will be plugged in - some of the more Chinese designs are not really suited to the outdoor life at all, and should really only be used indoors anyway, certainly any design using a power brick with an IEC lead or a clover leaf 3 pin connector, is really indoors or at least covered areas only. A 13A socket that encourages folk to plug things in and then drop them in a puddle is not a good idea.

  • What exactly do you mean by an e-bike. Is it akin to a pedal cycle with a battery and motor to assist tired legs, or is it one of these: www.visordown.com/.../best-electric-motorcycles-2022
