Vulcanised Indian Rubber Cable Sample

Asking if anyone has a small piece of  Vulcanised Indian Rubber Cable they would be willing to donate. Im after this for Science Technology Engineering & Maths STEM outreach work I do for Schools & a Science museum in Cornwall.

I will use this to discuss the development of electrical insulating materials used in submarine telecommunications.

Thank you

  • Rubber was not widely used for submarine cables. Gutta Percha being favoured .

  • Thank you. I’m after an example of circa 1930s domestic rubber insulated cable - preferably perished to illustrate why rubber wasn’t used for submarine telecommunications cables and how, without the discovery of the properties of Gutta Percha we may be 70 years behind the development of submarine cables.

  • Gordon,

I have found some VIR T&E underneath my floorboards, but it is still in serviceable condition even though it probably dates from the 1960s.

I also have a short length of cotton covered singles (and the galvanized conduit in which they were entombed) but they can hardly be said to be "perished" either even though they may go back to the 1920s.

Happy to post a picture if it helps.
