Lobby Motorised Damper Wiring

Hi all,

We have installed a number of motorized smoke dampers in lobbies which are fitted with BEN24 motorized actuators. We have used a non fire rated junction box to contain the wiring connections and this box is within the smoke shaft.

The damper and actuator assembly has arrived onsite with non fire rated cabling (O5Z1Z1-F) from the factory. The power supply cable to the damper from the wider system is with FP200 enhanced. I was told that using a non fire rated junction box is non compliant. In my view this is not true as the box is within the same compartment as the damper actuator and the actuator cables are themselves non fire rated.

Something to note is that the smoke shaft is lined with a duct so all the cable will be exposed to is heat - well until the duct itself fails.

  • Just to make you feel better, I was on a site before christmas that did just the same, FP cable for the Fire Panel to an interface box, then flex from there to the damper, via a Wiska plastic JB.

I have no idea if this meets the fire regs, I suspect it does, as the Fire Alarm fitters didnt question the way it was done, and they were signing the Fire Alarm Install Certificate. It was also inspected by an Independent Inspector, who did pick up on a few things, but didnt question the flex to the dampers.
