Training for a Plumber?

A plumber friend (yes, I have one!) has asked what training he could do to support his fitting of boilers/heating systems etc.

I said C&G 2382 - Wiring Regs would be a good start, at least he'll learn you can't use the cpc as a switched live then!

After that, C&G 2392 could be a good one, I&T of single phase installations.

Also, the boiler companies do their own courses on wiring up heating controls (WB is 2 days, so maybe a bit more in-depth than I would expect).

Are there any others that he could do to help him be safe and mak his wiring compliant?

Thansk

  • If a plumber/gas fitter needs to fit a new circuit, he (or she) will need to be certified. Whether doing the heating controls is a plumber's or sparks's job is debatable. I have previously lost that debate!

BTW, getting gas certified is very much more difficult than getting on a CPS, even now.

  • True but if you make a mistake with the electrics you could kill yourself, if you make a mistake with the gas you might kill your household and your neighbours.

  • Not sure this is true really - there are not that many gas explosions that blow up a street - most hurt no-one, and the most common no. after that  is the one person involved.  anything bigger is so rare they get on the news, Far more common is carbon monoxide poisoning, and whlle there are some tens of near misses, that only kills about 7 folk a year according to the HSE,

Electricity is more complex 3 Riddor reported fatalaties last year, 2 employees and one self-employed

Then for totals - so including members of the public, perhaps 10-20 per year, but the latest available data is a bit out of date

Electrocutions 2001 to 2017 where the cause of death codes are

    • W85 - Exposure to electric transmission lines

    • W86 - Exposure to other specified electric current (obvious shocks)

    • W87 - Exposure to unspecified electric current (Including burns or other injury from electric current, electric shock, and electrocution).

Far more folk are hurt by cars more like ten a day, and pretty  much anyone can repair those. Both Gas and electricity are pretty safe really

  • Getting on an Electrical Self Certification scheme is not going to happen, you need an NVQ3 in Electrical Installation as a new starter now, so he won't be spending 2 years and £4000 doing that. He just wants to know a bit more and be able to trace a fault, as well as wiring his boilers correctly, rather than doing it as he currently thinks it should be done.
