Use of Schuko sockets in a UK home only for a HiFi system

Hello everyone,

This is my first post.

I have a question about using Schuko sockets in a UK domestic home.

But first, a bit of background might help.

I am a Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. I didn't think my people would be very good at answering this question which is why I am here!

In more detail, I would like to use a Schuko socket to which only my hi-fi system would connect. The socket would be connected to a brand-new consumer unit with RCBO’s. There will also be surge protection. All will be done to the latest standards and specifications by a fully qualified electrician. The wiring diagram would be based on the one in this link: https://www.russandrews.com/images/pdf/MainsWiringGuide111023.pdf

I will also have a regular UK 3-pin socket. I am a reviewer for a HiFi magazine and want to do the above as the basis of an article on HiFi power supplies.

So back to the question, is there any legal reason (or otherwise) that I can't use the Schuko socket in the UK?

If the answer is “yes I can”, albeit with specific conditions, I'd like to quote that in my article/review. Especially if the Schuko supply sounds better than the UK 3-pin with fuse!

I am looking forward to your response.

Many thanks

Paul

  • The threading in this discussion has made it difficult to keep up with new posts

Too true of many a thread here, unfortunately.. The 'view latest' option only takes you to the very latest reply, so if like me you only call in occasionally and there have been several replies to a thread since the last look, which are scattered though the thread as people 'reply' to different replies, you can only find them by reading through the entire thing - which is often impractical. Many a time I'm convinced I've seen an interesting reply for the first time even though it's apparently been there for several days. The 'tree structure' doesn't even work properly anyway, since it seems to prune things to two levels - so replies to replies to replies get listed under the 1st reply, rather than under the one you're replying to - making the contortions less worthwhile anyway.

I can only imagine that those that designed the current scheme either only read historical threads when they're complete (which the structure of who replies to what is somewhat useful) or like teenagers who seem to have everything on their phone with an alert whenever anything is added, seem addicted to reading every reply within seconds of it being added. For the likes of me who only call in a few times a day, when time permits, the old software that listed everything in simple linear chronological order with (IIRC) unread replies emboldened, worked much better.

  • so if like me you only call in occasionally

    ???

  • 'call in' in this context means "read the fora"

'Occasionally' clearly means different things depending on your time frame,

    Mke

  • As opposed to "regularly".
