Arc Fault Detection Device without rcd

one of our contractors has installed several Hagar ARM932U Arc Fault Detection Device.

After many enquires Hagar Technical confirm its only a MCB with AFDD.

The contractors insist its an rcbo as well , i put 550mA on an (RCD) Residual Current Device test  it did not trip.

this had made me wonder if others have come across such devices and where they are designed to be installed to?

  • If the contractor installed them, and intimated they were RCBO's, then what did their verification paperwork say and indicate on their protection device test results?

I presume if they have recorded disconnection/trip times on their paperwork then those results were "False"?

  • they did provide an EIC at my request ,this had the trip time as 11mS .

i can only think these must be fabricated results.

  • ahhhhh. This is the true effect of demanding paperwork from installers instead of someone else inspecting. In the old days we knew it had not been tested. Now we are far less sure.

  • So to me that would be classed as an untruth and improper and false deleration, which has been signed by a so called "Competent" person and making an untrue decleration.

  • oh absolutely - but if you ask people to mark their own homework, when money depends on something, it can be remarkable what passes - its the argument for local authority building control inspections, rather than self certification. Equally, independent inspection is expensive and the real cost of failure may not be so great to warrant it. But lets not pretend that folk are always perfect.
