Fire alarm supply domestic property

A new dwelling requires a grade A category LD2 system. The main intake is typical of domestic arrangement being provided in a flush mounted cabinet in an external wall. The consumer unit is 20m away in a cupboard in the main entrance hall.

Where should the supply for the CIE be taken from? My reading of both 5839-1 and 6 is that it should be at or near the origin of the supply. Given, the questions over metal consumer units located outside, is some kind of variation appropriate?

  • BS5839-6 says "an independent circuit at the dwelling's consumer unit, in which case no other electrical equipment should be connected to the circuit". It's only BS5839-1 (for commercial premises & HMOs) that requires it to be from the origin (or as close as practicable

  • I only have BS5839-6 2013 which states;

    The above would suggest that a Grade A system needs to comply with all parts of BS5839-1 apart from clause 25.4 (e), which relates to the capacity of the battery back-up. That being the case, the supply for the CIE needs to be derived from as close to intake as possible.

    Are you saying there is something different in the more recent standard?

  • No sorry,

    I was mistaken. 2019 + A1: 2020 is the latest, but 15.2 hasn't changed.
