What is the clearance distance for a buried underground cables for both LV and HV?

Hi all,

I know depending on the land use the depth for the cable changes but what about horizontal distance ? The longer the distance between buried cables and other structures e.g house  the better. However, is there a standard minimum guidance for exclusion zone for a buried underground cable?

Thanks.

  • I suspect not a lot - practicalities (just having to run a cable where there isn't much room) would tend to limit what could be dictated. I think building regs have a general rule not to dig within 45º vertically from the bottom of a foundation (e.g. it the foundation was close to the surface, the horizontal limit would be the same as the trench depth) - especially when trenching parallel to the structure, but where a cable enters a building, even that can't always be adhered to.

The only general guidance I know of is the Streetworks UK - but that only works for 2m wide pavements, and a lot of pavements aren't that wide.

  • Effectively half of the depth to base (not to cover).
