  • Yeah that really makes you feel old. I was chatting to my friend Katie about music she didn't know some if the artists I said. Then it hit me im old!!

  • Hello Kelly:

You didn't state, in your last message, the type of music that you like to remember.

As you are so much younger than me, my CD selection goes back through a lot more different periods.

When I arrived in Toronto in the late 1950's the major pop hit was "The Battle of New Orleans" by Johnny Horton - they had a special version made for Canada. It changed all references to "British troops" to "Rebels".

    What happened to your records?

  • Hello Chris:

All my records went into the trash including the turntable, amps and home made speaker system (with 17 individual speakers per channel).

Also my tape recorders, 8 mm sound camera and projectors.

All old technology has to be thrown away sooner or later.

Daughter was ruthless when we cleared Mother's house. Just because you have 3 bedrooms with fitted wardrobes, does not mean that you have to fill all of them!

Some of the clutter was mine. Flushed

  • Hello Chris:

Once a year (usually starting in January) my wife and I go through every drawer, cupboards, bookcases, travel cases and our multiple 17 gallons plastic buckets looking at everything to see what we can throw away.

Some things like the house deeds we have to keep until we sell the house, other legal documents like tax related material must be kept for 7 years. The loose paper stuff from last years  (2024) is placed in identified paper envelopes which go into a file cabinet.

Because of possible hurricane problems each year, we have some storage cases that are identified as "TAKE IN THE EVENT OF STORM"

In the UK deeds are held electronically by land registry these days - so as long as the property has been bought/sold in the last couple of decades, the paper versions have only sentimental value now.

  • A couple of decades ago, one Friday afternoon, I was made aware that a member of staff had fraudulently claimed a qualification which was a condition of holding the post. I verified the situation.

That left me with a gap in the staffing, so I thought that I would promote the next in line on an acting basis. I could not say why, but I rang him and asked that he bring his certificate in on Monday morning. He said no problem, but did he need to take it out of its frame? That was pretty good evidence that he had one. :-)

To finish the story, I invited the miscreant to clear up the problem by bringing his certificate in on Monday too. I never saw him again.

  • Hello Andy:

I purchased my house in 1972 so that is why I have paper versions.

The local property office has a on-line system that identifies the official owner(s) of a house including the mortgage situation.

HOWEVER can you trust what is in the database?

    The answer is NO.

A couple of years ago I found out that "they" (unknown) had completely removed our names from this database.

There have also been cases where fraud had been committed in the US, when house ownership was transferred without the real owners knowledge, then sold to a third party.

I look/verify the database information every month!

  • Hello Chris:

That is the sort of material that is in my "TAKE IN THE EVENT OF A  STORM".

Can you image what paper documents got lost by the poor people in LA, who"s houses have burnt down!
