Solar PV maintenance/servicing

Hi all

This question is based around social housing or housing maintenance.

What level of detail do you ask for when maintaining/servicing existing Solar PV systems and although best practice what is your frequency?

  • What sort of servicing do you have in mind?

My panels have been on the roof for over 10 years now and have had nothing, not even a wash, done to them - and seem to be performing more than adequately still. If there was to be any sort of failure in the system (either panels, inverter or connections) that would probably show up in the generation meter readings (if on FIT or similar) so could probably be monitored without actual site visits.

The system will get a quick visual a least when the rest of the installation has an EICR. The inverter continually monitors for earth faults on the d.c. side.

Some sites my differ though - if subject to a lot of falling leaves perhaps some cleaning might be in order. Also I suppose there's a duty of care that needs to be formalised for rental situations, that owner-occupiers might be included to cover implicitly by keeping an eye open and applying common sense.

  • Thanks for the reply, we are a social housing provider and manage and maintain many properties, the code of practice states periodic testing but doesn't give any guidance on frequencies etc, some training providers say carry out a visual annually with basic tests like polarity, open/short circuit and a thermal test of the panels where possible, I was looking to see what others do, Thanks again.
