Scope of BS 7671 and BS 60204

I am trying to work out where bs7671 applies and where bs 60204 applies on an industrial site. The regs exclude from scope “Electrical equipment of machines covered by BS EN 60204. There is a biggish control panel housed in a brick kiosk controlling a few pumps and aerators. That but seems clearly within BS 60204. However there are also a couple of floodlights on the roof of the brick kiosk and a metal clad socket dangling onto the floor of the kiosk (just loose not screwed to anything) which has a flowmeter plugged into it. These have been connected in to mcbs within the panel. Do these things fall within bs7671 or does the fact that they are wired out of the panel put them within BS60204?

  • Do these things fall within bs7671 or does the fact that they are wired out of the panel put them within BS60204?

The answer is probably "yes" (to either or both).

The tricky point is that BS EN IEC 60204-1 refers back to IEC 60364 series of standards for electrical installation elements of the machinery ... in the UK, the IEC 60364 series of standards is published as BS 7671.

Because the socket-outlet and floodlights are not really for the function of Machinery (as defined), nor are they within a control panel, switchgear or controlgear assembly, or assembly relevant to the functioning of the machinery, the most likely conclusion is they ought to be installed in accordance with IEC 60364 series (BS 7671 in the UK).

The reason I use 'most likely' is that only a court of law can provide a definitive interpretation of a standard for a particular set of circumstances, and of course I haven't seen the particular installation in question to provide a firm opinion.

One thing to consider, I guess ... and I apologise for finishing with another question ...It appears the control panel  is also being used as a distribution board ... does it conform to BS EN 61439 series (or its predecessor, BS EN 60439 series) in addition to BS EN 60204-1 (both sets of standards may well apply)?
