Dual band Smart Meters

I have for years avoided the installation of a smart meter by telling the numerous callers that the gas meter is about 15metres from the electricity meter and the electricity meter is over 20 metres from the house and for good measure I have a three phase supply. They usually say I will put a note on your file to contain the above and stop you being called, the calls continued.

Until January when yet again I get a call and am told during a 15 minute call that the distance problem has been solved. I repeatedly tell the caller that I do not want a smart meter fitted if the in home display does not work over the distance. No problem all solved. So I book an installation date.

Being cautious about anything to do with smart meters I get on the interweb and find there are dual band smart meters to solve the distance problem.

Meter installer arrives late,17:15, on a cold wet January night. I tell him I do not want him to install a meter if it is not dual band and the home display will work in the house. It's dual band and will work in the house he says.

After he has taken the electricity meter out he says the dual band is only dual band for the gas meter, the home display is still single band (2.4GHz), I say it will not work int he house, yes it will he says , no it won't I repeat, yes it will he repeats.

To cut a long story short it does work part time in a cupboard in the kitchen but if I remove it to read  it or press the buttons it looses connection.

When the installer was told it worked he expressed surprise!  He was trying to pack up quickly have told me it may take some time to connect. possibly a few hours

I complained and ask for a data access request.

They agree I was misled but its alright as the home display will work in the garage and I can have an app which will let me get 1/2 hourly readings and they are going to have a word with the manager of the colleague who told me it would work. They have ignored my data access request and told me there are no dual band home displays. They have not bothered to reply to my last email.

So their misleading me about home displays is now my problem!

Before I waste my time complaining  to the data protection registrar and to OFF whoever is responsible for the energy industry does anyone on here know if dual band home displays exist?

Many thanks

Kevin

  • Afraid that I cannot help you, but the situation is familiar so thank you for the warning. British Gas attempted to install a smart leccy meter a year or two ago, but failed.

My gas meter is too big to be smart. I can hardly change when I heat the house, and I am not going to change dinner time, so I see little benefit in having one.
