400v single phase heating element

Hi,

I am currently having a production line designed in China which consists of some large heating elements. One of the questions of the supplier is if the heating elements can be supplied as 380/400v single phase (using a transformer). This seems odd to me as it is not something I have came across before and not something i can find an answer on online - is this legal in the UK and is there any special signage we will require for this?

thanks in advance.

  • As for signage, if they're just connected between lines of a conventional 230/400V 3-phase system, then nothing extra is normally needed for voltage related signage. BS 7671 requirement these days is based on the voltage to earth exceeding 230V nominal (rather than the voltage between live conductors) and a 400V 3-phase system still only has 230V to earth. That wasn't always the case those, and past editions did consider the voltage between live conductors as well and so you do still sometimes see warning 400V or 415V notices about.

On the other hand if you did use a transformer to generate 400V single phase and earthed one end of that, you would have 400V to Earth, so some warning signage may well be required. (At least if it was still in BS 7671 territory, rather than some equipment standard which it might be if it was all together within the same unit).
