400v single phase heating element

Hi,

I am currently having a production line designed in China which consists of some large heating elements. One of the questions of the supplier is if the heating elements can be supplied as 380/400v single phase (using a transformer). This seems odd to me as it is not something I have came across before and not something i can find an answer on online - is this legal in the UK and is there any special signage we will require for this?

thanks in advance.

  • Just to add that 400V single phase loads aren't uncommon - some industrial welders use that, as does a lot of stadium flood lighting (as the long runs make voltage drop a problem at 230V). And of course most "3-phase" equipment is really built of multiples of 3 essentially single phase items in the same box - heating elements or motor windings only have two ends - it's the way they're connected together that makes them 3-phase.
