DIN Rail Assemblies and conformity

I'm after some practical guidance on what might be needed for putting together components into a DIN rail enclosure, and ensuring a conformant end product.  I'm aware of regulation 536.4.203 in BS7671 which pushes responsibility for conformance assessment of any integration of components into an enclosure to BS EN 61439 to the assembler unless it is done all from one manufacturer in accordance with that manufacturer's instructions.  For custom assemblies, this will rarely be the case, so practically what needs to be done for the conformity assessment?

Our use case for this is assembling a simple set of components - RCD, SP Isolators (as functional switches), BS88 fuseholders (for circuit protection) and neon indicators to provide a switching unit for replacing older dimmed circuit control with switched hard power circuits to feed new-fangled LED lights.  We might find a single manufacturer to do all of this in one of their own enclosures, but we might not.  If not, what would we need to do without spending tens of thousands on external testing?

The documentation required for a technical file to back up an associated Declaration of Conformity doesn't look to be too bad.  I guess we would need copies of the relevant sections of 61439 and review those requirements, recording how we have assessed conformity with each and relying on manufacturer data sheets.

  • Just to expand the scope of this discussion a bit, we're also considering a retro-fit of a similar solution into existing dimmer enclosures.  They generally have DIN-rail sections in which we could mount the new components after removing the old circuit protection, and we would disconnect/remove the existing dimming circuitry entirely.  Clearly this would be a significant modification to the original product and any conformity of the modified assembly would be down to us. This makes me more nervous as it would no longer be an assembly of 'standard' items that is (I think) easier to justify, although there is no assumption that an assembly of conforming components in itself produces a conforming product.
