Ive got half a dozen commando sockets to put in a metal welding workshop should i be looking to put them on a rcd
Unless the instructions for the welder indicate that they absolutely won't work if you do, probably yes - they are just sockets for 32A appliances after all.
You may ask what sort of cable plug into them, how electrically skilled the persons will be and how well will the kit generally be treated - most metal workshops are not that delicate and normal flex is not that robust against offcuts of metal sheet etc.
Certainly its what the regs would indicate as I guess it's an 'other location' and while site specific RA and exception is possible, it is the exception....
An RCD not exceeding 30 mA is required, which are:
1. Socket-outlets with a rated current not exceeding 32 A in locations where they are liable to be used by persons of capability BA1, BA3 or children (BA2, BA3)
2. Socket-outlets with a rated current not exceeding 32 A in other locations
3. Mobile equipment with a rated current not exceeding 32 A for use outdoors
You will need 4 pole RCDs if the sockets are 3 phase and neutral.
